Глагол покинуть эквивалентен английским abandon, forsake, desert и leave. Abandon имеет значение 'покинуть в беде, бросить на произвол судьбы' и может взаимозаменяться с глаголами desert и forsake: покинуть жену (друга) – to abandon a wife (a friend), to desert a wife (a friend), to forsake a wife (a friend). Desert и forsake могут, в отличие от abandon, сочетаться с отвлеченными существительными. Так, desert употребляется в сочетании с отвлеченным существительным-подлежащим: мужество покинуло его – his courage deserted him. Forsake в сочетании с отвлеченным существительным-дополнением означает 'бросить что-л., отказаться от чего-л.' и не переводится на русский язык глаголом покинуть: бросить дурную привычку – to forsake an evil habit. Abandon в сочетании с существительным, обозначающим место, означает 'покинуть в силу необходимости': покинуть горящий корабль – to abandon the burning ship. Desert может употребляться в значении 'покидать – дезертировать': покинуть пост – to desert a post. Разница в оттенках значения между desert и abandon ясно предстает на следующем примере: a cowardly officer deserts his ship; the helpless passengers abandon it.
